Fruit are seed bearing parts of the plant consisting of edible tissue surrounding the seeds. The edible part is juicy, pulpy, fleshy, sweet-sour in the taste. Most fruit have a ripened seed. When we eat fruit it loss very less amont of nutrition. Fruits are great gift of nature to mankind. They are delicious, nutritious, ready to eat foods. They have nice flavour and texture. Fresh fruit have an attractive colour.
People of all age group enjoy fruits as an appetiser, snacks or a dessert. Fruit are rich in vitamins and minerals. They protect us against many deficiency diseases. They provide roughage or fiber which prevents constipation.
Classification And Nutritive Value Of Fruits:
Fruit are generally rich source of vitamins C and vitamin A. Fruits contain good nutrition value as compare to other food. They also give us energy as they have a lot of carbohydrates in them. It have both edible and non edible portions. Generally seed and peels are non-edible parts. In some of the fruit, the outer covering is also eaten like apricots, peaches, pears. The peels and seeds of fruits provide roughage which is essential for normal bowel movement. We can group fruits according to their nutritive value as follows:
Fruit like mangoes, apricots, gooseberries, papayas belong to this group. These are rich in beta-carotene, a precursor of vitamin A. They protect the eyes against night blindness and other vitamin A deficiency conditions.
Vitamin C rich fruits:
This group include citrus fruit like oranges, grapefruit, sweet lime and fruit like amla, guavas, pineapples, strawberries, etc. They are rich in vitamin C. Vitamin c provides resistance against infection, prevents bleeding of gums and helps in speedy recovery of wounds.
Fruits like apples, bananas, melons and grapes which are not mentioned above are included in this group. They provide good health by providing vitamins and minerals to the body. Some of them also add bulk to the diet as they have a lot of fibres. This help to prevent constipation by maintaining normal movement of GIT tract.
Fruits also have a small amount of B vitamins, I.e. thiamine, riboflavin and niacin.
