Function of Nutrients and its importance in life

Before study about function of nutrients we firstly discuss ; what is nutrients? It is compound which present in food and essential for own health. They work as building block of body and maintain all nutritional requirement.

Nutrients is work as fuel in our body. Good diet contain all essential nutrients. As you know each day we use some of food like wheat, rice, dhal, vegetables many more. These all given food contain essential nutrients. Let us get to know the function of nutrients in the body.

Function of nutrients:-

Water :

Our body contain near about 60-65 per-cent water. Thus you will realise it is essential part of our body structure. Water is universal solvent. It carries food into the body. Water help in digestion and absorption of food and ensure elimination of waste from body. Water help to regulate body temperature.

It acts as a mobile part of our body such as joints and prevents friction. We need 5-6 glass of water each day. We get it from the water we drink and beverage such as tea, coffee and fruit juice.

Carbohydrates :

Carbohydrates provide near about 50-60 per-cent of total calories in the diet. The energy in food is expressed in calories. One gram of carbohydrates produce four calories. When we eat excess amount of carbs the unused portion is stored as glycogen. These glycogen converted to fat and stored for later used.

Proteins :

As we know proteins are present in all living tissues- both plant and animals. Next to watet protein is most abundant compound in our body. About a sixth of our body weight is protein. Main function of protein is building of new tissues. It also help to maintain and repair of already build tissue

The protein contribute near about 10-15 per-cent of total calories in diet. Energy supply is secondary function of dietary protein. Each gram of protein gives four Kcal of energy to your body. Protein is present in vegetables and animals sources. Among the former, dhals, pulses , nuts, and soyabean are good source of protein. Among the latter milk, fish, eggs, meat, and liver are rich sources.

Fats :

The fats should provide about 20-30 % of calories in the diet. One gram of oil or fat gives nine Kcal of energy to the body. Please remember that the fats and oils are concentrated source of energy. We need fats as a medium for the absorption of fat-soluble vitamins. We gain essential fatty acid from vegetables oils. The Oilseeds and nuts we used in food preparation also contribute some fat.

Minerals :

Our bones and teeth need minerals for their for formation and maintaining. Red pigment in blood is formed with the help of iron. Zinc is essential trace element. Zinc maintain proper growth in children. Minerals have an important role in the regulation of number of body processes like;

  • Muscle contraction
  • Nerve stimulation
  • Respiration

We get minerals from variety of foods. For example;

  • We get calcium from milk and leafy vegetables.
  • Iron from leafy vegetables, dhals and eggs.
  • Sodium from salt and other foods.
  • Zinc from meat, poultry, fish and nuts.

Vitamins :

We need many different vitamins, for example vitamin A, B-complex, C, D, etc. Our body needs these to grow and develop. Vitamin help to our eyes, nerves and skin to remain healthy. It is help to protect against any infections. We need very small amounts of these vitamins. We get it from number of foods. Sources of these vitamins are; leafy vegetables, carrots, amla, guava, orange, whole grain and eggs.
